2003 NBA Draft

Announcement Date: June 26, 2003

Bulls draft Kirk Hinrich (7th overall), Mario Austin (36th overall), Matt Bonner (45th overall), and Tommy Smith (53rd overall)

Matt Bonner was traded on draft night to the Toronto Raptors for a future pick — which ended up being the 38th pick in the 2004 NBA draft. The Tommy Smith selection was acquired via the Miami Heat from an October 2001 trade that sent Sean Lampley to Miami. Lampley was the Bulls second round pick in 2001 (45th overall) and his pick was acquired from the Charlotte Hornets for the rights to Roberto Duenas. Duenas, a 7’3″, 300 pound big man from Spain, never played a minute in the NBA.

Hindsight Is 20/20: Neither Mario Austin nor Tommy Smith ever played a minute in the NBA. Notable players still on the board at #7 included David West and Boris Diaw. Notable players still on the board at #36 included Zaza Pachulia, Matt Bonner, Mo Williams, Kyle Korver, Keith Bogans, Steve Blake and James Jones.
